Wágner T, Ormándi T, Tettamanti T and Varga I (2023), "SPaT/MAP V2X communication between traffic light and vehicles and a realization with digital twin", Computers and Electrical Engineering. Vol. 106, pp. 108560.
Abstract: The present paper’s focus is the V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication between traffic light controller and road vehicles. After a brief review on the state-of-the-art V2X communication technologies and their feasibility for practical implementation, a brief description of their potential is discussed providing a working solution for SPaT/MAP (Signal Phase and Timing and MAP as intersection geometry) standard based communication, specifically for automotive proving ground usage. The main outcome of the proposed solution is a full y flexible traffic control system applying industrial PLC while ensuring a standardized V2X protocol. As a demonstrative HiL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) example, exploiting the elements of the traffic management system at the ZalaZONE Automotive Proving Ground, a GLOSA (Green Light Optimal Speed Advisory) scenario is presented with the developed SPaT/MAP V2X communication realizing a global optimum traffic control solution. The more, the whole framework is designed in a way that it is capable of using mixed reality components for testing purposes and realizing a digital twin for traffic lights. The method of virtualization for V2X communication is introduced using a co-simulation framework of three common software tools (SUMO, Veins, and OMNeT++).

Hamadneh J, Duleba S and Esztergár-Kiss D (2022), "Stakeholder viewpoints analysis of the autonomous vehicle industry by using multi-actors multi-criteria analysis", TRANSPORT POLICY. Vol. 126, pp. 65-84.
Abstract: The availability of autonomous vehicles (AVs) on the market will create a novel situation for every stakeholder. A lot of research has been conducted on developing the AVs and the consequences of having AVs on the market, but comprehensive studies concerning various viewpoints on the introduction of AVs into the market can be scarcely found. This research is examining different actors' viewpoints on the acceptance of privately shared autonomous vehicles (PSAVs). Four groups of stakeholders are identified as the following: users, legislators, operators, and manufacturers. The multi-actor multi-criteria analysis (MAMCA) is used, where the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and the parsimonious AHP (PAHP)methods are applied to evaluate each actor's objectives and criteria. From each group, a representative sample is collected, the actors evaluate a set of pairwise comparison matrices (PCMs), and their consistency is continuously checked. As a result, the objectives and the criteria are ranked and presented. The main finding of the objectives' analysis presents that the safety concerns receive the highest ranking (i.e., weight is 0.085), while the ease of use and the interoperability across the borders have the lowest rankings ((i.e., weight is 0.048, and 0.0515, respectively). The main finding of criteria's analysis shows that ease of use has the lowest ranking (i.e., weight is 0.0024), and the highest rank is related to the reduction in vehicle accidents caused by the malfunction (i.e., weight is 0.0495). Thus, it seems that safety related issues are the most important factor in accepting PSAV. The result of this study is useful for decision-makers and transport planners to form policies, regulations, and guidelines regarding the future implementations of PSAVs before their arrival to the market.

Abstract: Tourist attractions are dispersed across wide geographic areas even within the cities making the data collection prohibitively expensive. For these reasons, information on tourism destinations should be collected automatically. Recently, the collection of particular data on destinations has become easier with the growing popularity of location-based applications. Based on Google Popular Time (GPT), behavioral data are collected to investigate the actual tourist behavior. The statistical analysis clearly shows the presence of outliers in the collected data. Consequently, a regression model based robust approach is used to study the tourists' processing time (i.e., the time spent) at various tourism destinations in Budapest. Such spatial parameters are adopted as car parking, public transport station, and location. The statistical outcomes present that the availability of car parking or public transport stations significantly affects the tourists' processing time at the tourism destinations. The findings demonstrate the benefit of usingGPT and other online resources to analyze and predict individual behavior. Furthermore, current study reveals that location-based services provide a principal option for tourists during their journeys.

Németh B, Fényes D, Bede Z and Gáspár P (2022), "Optimal Control Design for Traffic Flow Maximization Based on Data-Driven Modeling Method", Energies. Vol. 15(1)
Abstract: This paper proposes enhanced prediction and control design methods for improving traffic flow with human-driven and automated vehicles. To achieve accurate prediction for the entire time horizon, data-driven and model-based prediction methods were integrated. The goal of the integration was to accurately predict the outflow of the traffic network, which was selected as the highway section in this paper. The proposed novel prediction method was used in the optimal design for calculating controlled inflows on highway ramps. The goal of the design was to reach the maximum outflow of the traffic network, even against disturbances on uncontrolled inflows of the network. The control design leads to an optimization problem based on the min–max principle, i.e., the traffic outflow is considered to be maximized by controlled inflows and to be minimized by uncontrolled inflows. The effectiveness of the prediction and the control methods through simulation examples are illustrated, i.e., traffic outflow can be maximized by the control system under various uncontrolled inflow values.

Szoke L, Aradi S and Tettamanti T (2022), "Investigating Successor Features in the Domain of Autonomous Vehicle Control", Transportation Research Procedia. Vol. 62, pp. 181-188.
Abstract: In this article, the basic Reinforcement Learning (RL) concepts are discussed, continued with a brief explanation of Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). Reasoning for the application of RL in the autonomous vehicle control domain is accompanied with a developed basic environment for simulation-based training of agents. Furthermore, we look at the available literature of successor features, and the recent achievements of its utilization. Our motivation is to tackle the problem of credit assignment with reward decomposition by using successor features, because the complex tasks while driving can cause unsuccessful training and can be challenging. After explaining the applied methodology and showing how it works, state-of-the-art ideas are investigated and infused into the vehicle control realm. Moreover, the paper details how these features can be tailored to the highway driving scenarios and what is the secret behind its capability to boost the performance of the RL agent. In order to investigate the proposed problems in a credible way we applied a high-fidelity traffic simulator (SUMO) as our environment, and concluded different trainings based on various scenarios. We present successor features applied to an autonomous vehicle control setting, such as highway commute. Our results imply that learned skills can help with the multi-objective rewarding problem, and agents applied to changing reward systems can adapt quickly to the new tasks. The only thing to find is the correct decomposition and selection of successor features.

Abstract: To provide seamless information for the travelers, an effective transnational door-to-door journey planner is required, where information from different operators, combined solutions, and value-added parameters appear in a realistic environment. Thus, the aim is to support seamless mobility solutions and create multimodal transport networks connecting separate systems. The elaborated method realizes this by identifying the potential exchange points between separate networks and by filtering the suitable exchange points to run the routing algorithm between the local journey planners. The proposed solution builds on a flexible algorithm, which parameters can be easily updated and extended. In case of any changes, using the formulated theoretical background, an up-todate and realistic implementation can be derived from the foundations of the framework. In addition, the elaborated method is fully capable to cover wide geographical areas and to provide a transferable solution.

Rizopoulos D and Esztergár-Kiss D (2022), "Heuristic time-dependent personal scheduling problem with electric vehicles", TRANSPORTATION.
Abstract: In this paper, a heuristic method which contributes to the solution of the Daily Activity Chains Optimization problem with the use of Electric Vehicles (DACO-EV) is presented. The DACO-EV is a time-dependent activity-scheduling problem of individual travelers in urban environments. The heuristic method is comprised of a genetic algorithm that considers as its parameters a set of preferences of the travelers regarding their initial activity chains as well as parameters concerning the transportation network and the urban environment. The objective of the algorithm is to calculate the traveler’s optimized activity chains within a single day as they emerge from the improved combinations of the available options for each individual traveler based on their flexibility preferences. Special emphasis is laid on the underlying speed-up techniques of the GA and the mechanisms that account for specific characteristics of EVs, such as consumption according to the EV model and international standards, charging station locations, and the types of charging plugs. From the results of this study, it is proven that the method is suitable for efficiently aiding travelers in the meaningful planning of their daily activity schedules and that the algorithm can serve as a tool for the analysis and derivation of the insights into the transportation network itself.

Fang X, Li H, Tettamanti T, Eichberger A and Fellendorf M (2022), "Effects of Automated Vehicle Models at the Mixed Traffic Situation on a Motorway Scenario", Energies. Vol. 15(6)
Abstract: There is consensus in industry and academia that Highly Automated Vehicles (HAV) and Connected Automated Vehicles (CAV) will be launched into the market in the near future due to emerging autonomous driving technology. In this paper, a mixed traffic simulation framework that integrates vehicle models with different automated driving systems in the microscopic traffic simulation was proposed. Currently, some of the more mature Automated Driving Systems (ADS) functions (e.g., Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assistant (LKA), etc.) are already equipped in vehicles, the very next step towards a higher automated driving is represented by Level 3 vehicles and CAV which show great promise in helping to avoid crashes, ease traffic congestion, and improve the environment. Therefore, to better predict and simulate the driving behavior of automated vehicles on the motorway scenario, a virtual test framework is proposed which includes the Highway Chauffeur (HWC) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication function. These functions are implemented as an external driver model in PTV Vissim. The framework uses a detailed digital twin based on the M86 road network located in southwestern Hungary, which was constructed for autonomous driving tests. With this framework, the effect of the proposed vehicle models is evaluated with the microscopic traffic simulator PTV Vissim. A case study of the different penetration rates of HAV and CAV was performed on the M86 motorway. Preliminary results presented in this paper demonstrated that introducing HAV and CAV to the current network individually will cause negative effects on traffic performance. However, a certain ratio of mixed traffic, 60% CAV and 40% Human Driver Vehicles (HDV), could reduce this negative impact. The simulation results also show that high penetration CAV has fine driving stability and less travel delay.

Kővári B, Tettamanti T and Bécsi T (2022), "Deep Reinforcement Learning based approach for Traffic Signal Control", Transportation Research Procedia. Vol. 62, pp. 278-285.
Abstract: The paper introduces a novel approach to the classical adaptive traffic signal control (TSC) problem. Instead of the traditional optimization or simple rule-based approach, Artificial Intelligence is applied. Reinforcement Learning is a spectacularly evolving realm of Machine Learning which owns the key features such as generalization, scalability, real-time applicability for solving the traffic signal control problem. Nevertheless, the researchers’ responsibilities become more serious regarding the formulation of state representation and the rewarding system. These Reinforcement Learning features are also the most fascinating and controversial virtues since the utilized abstractions decide whether the algorithm solves the problem or not. This paper proposes a new interpretation for the feature-based state representation and rewarding concept that makes the TSC problem highly generalizable and has scaling potential. The proposed method’s feasibility is demonstrated via a simulation study using a high-fidelity microscopic traffic simulator. The results justify that the Deep Reinforcement Learning based approach is a real candidate for real-time traffic light control.

Abstract: Abstract This work aims at constructing a bridge between robust control theory and reinforcement learning. Although, reinforcement learning has shown admirable results in complex control tasks, the agent's learning behavior is opaque. Meanwhile, system theory has several tools for analyzing and controlling dynamical systems. This article places deep Q-learning is into a control-oriented perspective to study its learning dynamics with well-established techniques from robust control. An uncertain linear time-invariant model is formulated by means of the neural tangent kernel to describe learning. This novel approach allows giving conditions for stability (convergence) of the learning and enables the analysis of the agent's behavior in frequency-domain. The control-oriented approach makes it possible to formulate robust controllers that inject dynamical rewards as control input in the loss function to achieve better convergence properties. Three output-feedback controllers are synthesized: gain scheduling ℋ2$$ H2 $$, dynamical ℋ∞$$ H∞ $$, and fixed-structure ℋ∞$$ H∞ $$ controllers. Compared to traditional deep Q-learning techniques, which involve several heuristics, setting up the learning agent with a control-oriented tuning methodology is more transparent and has well-established literature. The proposed approach does not use a target network and randomized replay memory. The role of the target network is overtaken by the control input, which also exploits the temporal dependency of samples (opposed to a randomized memory buffer). Numerical simulations in different OpenAI Gym environments suggest that the ℋ∞$$ H∞ $$ controlled learning can converge faster and receive higher scores (depending on the environment) compared to the benchmark double deep Q-learning.

Al-Salih W and Esztergár-Kiss D (2022), "Comparison between Physical Parameters and Sensory Parameters Regarding Travel Behavior Based on Sensitivity Analysis", JOURNAL OF ADVANCED TRANSPORTATION. Vol. 2022
Abstract: An effective way to optimize decision-making regarding the transport mode choice in the transportation system is improving or changing the travel cost, the travel time, or some other travel characteristics by using sensitivity analysis. This method encourages travelers to switch from private transportation to public transport, thus reducing pollution and emission. Furthermore, by searching for the most sensitive factors in travel behavior, the sensitivity analysis might highlight the directions of the improvement. However, according to previous studies, travelers will transfer from one transport mode to another only if the utility of the new choice is higher than the original transport mode. In the current paper, sensitivity analysis is applied to provide a comparison between the impacts of the physical and sensory parameters on the travel behavior and transport mode choice based on a utility function. The multinomial logit (MNL) model is used to estimate and perform the sensitivity analysis of the main variables. The sensitivity analysis demonstrates the degree of the travelers’ sensitivity to changes in the travel characteristics including both physical and sensory parameters. The models are calibrated with the NLOGIT software and validated through statistical indicators; thus, the essential factors influencing the choices are obtained. The input variables selected for the models are based on the data collected in Budapest, Hungary. The sensitivity analysis is determined by the outputs of the variables based on the changes of the input variables. As the results show, the travelers have more sensitivity to the changes in the physical parameters. Furthermore, the outcomes indicate that the travel cost is an essential variable, which greatly affects the decisions related to the transport mode choice. From the sensory parameters, the comfort factor has more influence than other factors. The results of the analysis present that the travelers’ sensitivity to changes in the travel utilities of the travel characteristics impacts the decisions regarding the mode choice behavior significantly.

Moslem S, Duleba S and Esztergár-Kiss D (2022), "Comparative mode choice analysis of university staff commuting travel preferences", EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURE RESEARCH: QUARTERLY. Vol. 22, pp. 83-107.
Abstract: Surveying citizen preferences on transportation modes when commuting is a major issue in urban transport planning. Most of the current methods approach the problem through the attributes of choices thus forecasting the demand indirectly. This paper aims to analyze a survey of commuting students and university staff by two direct preference models: the Analytic Hierarchy Process and the Best-Worst Method. Both techniques are based on pairwise comparisons; consequently, the commuting transport alternatives can be directly compared with each other, and the results are comparable, too. However, the two methods differ in the number and the nature of comparisons and in the consistency check, thus they can be regarded as competitors. A real-world case study on commuting student groups provides a better understanding of the proposed methodology. As a result, it can be stated that despite their low utilization in the transportation field, both the Analytic Hierarchy Process and the Best-Worst Method are applicable to mode choice preference surveys, and they produce comprehensive final outcomes. Therefore, the well-known tools of mode choice can be extended by Multi-Criteria-Decision-Making techniques to increase the efficiency of transport demand prediction. The extension is beneficial to avoid the bias of other methods in converting attribute evaluations to real mode choice decision, as both models, especially the Best-Worst approach, requires less cost and time than the mainstream techniques.

Abstract: This study proposes a multi-criteria decision-making approach using the grey theory to analyze mode choices. An extended analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model, which combines the advantages of the classic AHP and the grey theory for the accurate estimation of the commuting mode weight coefficients, is applied to a real transportation problem involving evaluators. The presented approach is applied for a real-life case study in Budapest. Based on the results, for all distances, public transport is ranked first followed by the car mode; however, for short- and mid-distance commuters, home office and bike might be suitable options, too. The results of this method are compared with the fuzzy AHP method. Having the same ranking in case of the two analyses means that the proposed method provides correct results under uncertainty in a group decision-making process. Thus, the outcomes highlight the applicability of the proposed method to the evaluation of mode choice.

Abstract: Transportation planning plays an essential role in improving the transportation system. Therefore, planners should have the ability to forecast the response of transportation demand to changes in the characteristics of the travellers. This has led researchers to work on more effective behavioural models by updating conventional models and replacing them with activity-based modelling to describe the daily activity chains performed by travellers. So, this study uses the activity model to model and analyse daily activity to identify the factors affecting the activity chain. This study aims to use logit models based on the utility function for modelling the activity chains of travellers in Budapest city. At the same time, we identify the effects of various characteristics related to the traveller, trip and location in the activity chains. This paper presents the relationships between the two aspects of travel behaviour and activity chains by providing two different causal structures. The results showed that the location attribute, activity duration and activity purpose were most influential on the activity chains. This study provides good insights into activity chains behaviour of travellers. It also extends the need to incorporate activity model behaviour within these complicated processes and household and individual decision making of daily activity.

Abstract: A personalized route planner is elaborated to support commuting, where soft measures are applied to influence the intentions of individual travel behavior. In order to do that a utility function is created, which consists of four attributes (travel time, travel cost, environmental effect, and health effect) to reflect on user preferences and considers four transport modes (walking, cycling, public transport, and car) as alternatives. The outcome of the utility function is a suggested transport mode based on the attributes, where the travelers may provide a feedback, whether they would really choose the suggested transport mode. During the analysis, statistical methods are used to determine the most substantial factors affecting transport mode choice and trip characteristics. Based on the analysis, travel time is still the most determinant attribute in transport mode choice. Considering the results, the web application suggests in most cases cycling as the best mode choice, and almost half of all users agree to choose the best transport mode, which is suggested by the application. The acceptance rate is much higher in case of public transportation and walking. The applicability of reduction, tunneling, suggestion, personalization, and simulation strategies are demonstrated. The elaborated method supports finding a solution to change travel behavior by understanding the affecting factors of the individual decision-making process, which might help promoting the choice of environmentally friendly transport modes.

Abstract: Sustainable mobility is one of the main objectives assigned by the common European transport policy. Nevertheless, the concept of a mobility plan has not yet been identified and applied as a direct tool contributing sustainable transport. Generally, companies and institutions do not have their own mobility plans. Accordingly, a new approach is developed to promote and introduce workplace mobility planning under the framework of the MOVECIT project. The main goal is to make transport more sustainable through mobility plans created for educational and municipal institutions, and companies in specific city-regions in Central Europe. In order to reach this aim a roadmap has been established, including current situation analysis, collection of mobility incentives, review of the situation of stakeholder involvement, and assessment of problems and opportunities of mobility planning.

Földes D, Csiszár C and Tettamanti T (2021), "Automation Levels of Mobility Services", Journal of Transportation Engineering, Part A: Systems. Vol. 147(5), pp. 04021021.
Abstract: Automation in road public transportation has been facilitated by the emergence of infocommunication and vehicle technologies. The widely accepted definitions of automation level focus solely on the driving aspects of vehicles. However, automation covers even more fields: service planning and management, vehicle and traffic control, and passenger-handling functions. Therefore, the main outcome of this paper is a method to be applied for the handling of complex automation levels, which gives a more comprehensive assessment of new transport technologies and mobility services. Functions and function categories are all described. The paper defines four levels of automation, with a detailed description of each level and each function. The method can be applied efficiently to the analysis and comparison of services, thereby highlighting possible fields of development. Mobility services can be described by values only in a general and simplified manner. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method, existing services are assessed. Dial-a-bus service, taxi, ride sourcing, and car sharing are evaluated using the novel method, which provides an objective and comprehensive comparison of these services.

Abstract: The performance of urban road networks can be easily evaluated based on vehicle count on links; however, it is not an easy task to measure it efficiently. This paper introduces a robust filtering technique for vehicle count estimation on links at signalized intersections by applying the H-infinity filter for which the traffic model is described by the phenomenon of traffic shockwaves. The method requires only measurement data of a single fixed sensor per lane. The proposed estimator has been validated via a high-fidelity microscopic traffic simulator (Vissim) on a test network based on real-world data. The performance of the model has been evaluated by generating gradually increasing traffic disturbance. The traditional Kalman filter was set as the benchmark over which the H-infinity filter had an advantage raising together with the increase of uncertainty. The simulation-based analysis demonstrated the efficiency of the robust estimation technique.

Abstract: Due to increasing issues of air pollution in urban areas continuous research is being conducted to upgrade models, which can predict the distribution of pollutants and thus enable timely interventions to mitigate their negative effects. To support these efforts, traffic data from an integrated transport model was used to drive the COPERT traffic emission model and the WRF-Chem atmospheric chemistry model. With reliable macroscopic traffic data from the Budapest region, traffic state estimations were calculated for every fifteen minutes of the day using dynamic assignment with predefined and time-varying static demand matrices. Then the COPERT vehicular emission model of average speeds was applied to provide the emission factors, so that the macroscopic emissions for the traffic network could be calculated. As a next step the WRF-Chem online coupled weather and atmospheric chemistry model was adapted to estimate atmospheric dispersion of pollutants (CO, NOx, O3). The coupled models are presented in a 2-day case study with qualitative comparison of obtained results with measurements. As a result, it can be stated that combining macroscopic road traffic modeling with atmospheric models can enhance the estimation efficiency of urban air pollution.

Kuchár P, Pirník R, Tichý T, Rástočný K, Skuba M and Tettamanti T (2021), "Noninvasive Passenger Detection Comparison Using Thermal Imager and IP Cameras", Sustainability. Vol. 13(22)
Abstract: Many modern vehicles today are equipped with an on-board e-call system that can send information about the number of passengers in the event of an accident. However, in case of fire or other major danger in a road tunnel, it is very important for rescue services to know not only the number of passengers in a given vehicle that has an accident and called help via e-call but how many people are in the tunnel in total. This paper deals with the issue of passenger detection and counting using the TPH3008-S Thermal camera and the VIVOTEK IP7361 IP Cameras noninvasively, i.e., the cameras are placed outside the vehicle. These cameras have their limitations; therefore, we investigated how to improve conditions and how to make detection better for future work. The main goal of this article is to summarize the achieved results and possibilities of improvement of the proposed system by adding other sensors and systems that would improve the final score of passenger detection. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach has to be modified and we have to add additional sensors or change methods to achieve more promising results. The results, findings and conclusions might be later used in tunnels and highways and also be applied in telematics and lead to better, safer road transport and improvement of existing tunnel systems sustainability by utilizing resources in a smarter way.

Tettamanti T (2021), "Advanced methods for turning rate estimation in roundabouts", Measurement. Vol. 181, pp. 109676.
Abstract: Road traffic monitoring at intersections is important in traffic engineering practice. Measured data together with traffic estimation represents base input information for traffic management or for road infrastructure development. Measuring turning rates is problematic in roundabouts due to their special geometry. This needs laborious manual traffic counts or other special methods such as automatic number-plate recognition by image processing or Bluetooth sensing, which are more costly compared to the simple automatic cross-sectional detection. As a cost-effective solution to this problem, a hybrid solution is suggested, i.e. using cross-sectional detection combined with advanced estimation. The paper investigated different methods. Traditional iteration based approach as well as estimators adopted from control theory were benchmarked and validated on real-world traffic data as well as via microscopic traffic simulation. Considering different error metrics, it is shown that constrained Kalman Filter and Moving Horizon Estimation provide reliable solution to the turning rate estimation problem in roundabouts.

Vol. 21(6)
Abstract: A spectacular measurement campaign was carried out on a real-world motorway stretch of Hungary with the participation of international industrial and academic partners. The measurement resulted in vehicle based and infrastructure based sensor data that will be extremely useful for future automotive R&D activities due to the available ground truth for static and dynamic content. The aim of the measurement campaign was twofold. On the one hand, road geometry was mapped with high precision in order to build Ultra High Definition (UHD) map of the test road. On the other hand, the vehicles—equipped with differential Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) for ground truth localization—carried out special test scenarios while collecting detailed data using different sensors. All of the test runs were recorded by both vehicles and infrastructure. The paper also showcases application examples to demonstrate the viability of the collected data having access to the ground truth labeling. This data set may support a large variety of solutions, for the test and validation of different kinds of approaches and techniques. As a complementary task, the available 5G network was monitored and tested under different radio conditions to investigate the latency results for different measurement scenarios. A part of the measured data has been shared openly, such that interested automotive and academic parties may use it for their own purposes.

Esztergár-Kiss D (2020), "Trip Chaining Model with Classification and Optimization Parameters", Sustainability. Vol. 12(16)
Abstract: In order to model the complex requirements of users travelling in an urban environment, the relevant parameters for creating activity chains have to be identified. In this study, travel related parameters were collected and grouped into two main types: classification parameters and optimization parameters. In the case of optimization parameters, further grouping was performed where general and comfort parameters were introduced. Additionally, the possible values and data sources of the parameters were identified. A utility function was created to take into account the optimization parameters and the weights. Weights related to comfort optimization parameters were aggregated to decrease the number of required settings by the users. Finally, the features of the proposed optimization algorithm are described. With the identified parameters, aggregated weights and elaborated utility function activity chains can be optimized for users with different requirements.

Esztergár-Kiss D and Braga Zagabria C (2020), "Method development for workplaces using mobility plans to select suitable and sustainable measures", Research in Transportation Business & Management. , pp. 100544.
Abstract: This paper aimed to provide a set of sustainable measures suitable for workplaces according to local requirements. To support this, a specific Transportation Demand Management strategy was applied, which is called Workplace Travel Planning. The result of such a Workplace Travel Plan is a package of measures implemented by an organization to encourage sustainable commuting. This research focused on two stages of the planning process: in the analysis stage, data were gathered from the stakeholders, and travel behavior was analyzed, while in the planning stage, a specific set of measures was proposed to the workplace. The selection of those measures relies on several aspects, such as existing workplace infrastructure, employer policies, employee requirements, local infrastructure, cost of implementation, level of sustainability. The mobility questionnaires are the instruments used to retrieve the input data used in the method, while the categorization of measures contributes to the next phase of the method serving as the output options. To each measure, factors, weights, and sustainability impacts were assigned. The connection of the phases was realized by creating the utility value of the measure, which enables the ranking of the measures. The approach provides a comprehensive framework of connecting employee requirements, employer willingness, and site-specific opportunities by defining a quantitative utility function, which results in a list of most suitable measures for a specific workplace.

Ortega J, Hamadneh J, Esztergár-Kiss D and Tóth J (2020), "Simulation of the Daily Activity Plans of Travelers Using the Park-and-Ride System and Autonomous Vehicles: Work and Shopping Trip Purposes", Applied Sciences. Vol. 10(8)
Abstract: The preferences of travelers determines the utility of daily activity plans. Decision-makers can affect the preference of travelers when they force private car users to use park-and-ride (P&R) facilities as a way of decreasing traffic in city centers. The P&R system has been shown to be effective in reducing uninterrupted increases in traffic congestion, especially in city centers. Therefore, the impacts of P&R on travel behavior and the daily activity plans of both worker and shopper travelers were studied in this paper. Moreover, autonomous vehicles (AVs) are a promising technology for the coming decade. A simulation of the AV as part of a multimodal system, when the P&R system was integrated in the daily activity plans, was carried out to determine the required AV fleet size needed to fulfill a certain demand and to study the impacts of AVs on the behavior of travelers (trip time and distance). Specifically, a group of travelers, who use private cars as their transport mode, was studied, and certain modifications to their daily activity plans, including P&R facilities and changing their transport mode, were introduced. Using the MATSim open-source tool, four scenarios were simulated based on the mentioned modifications. The four scenarios included (1) a simulation of the existing transport modes of the travelers, (2) a simulation of their daily activity plans when their transport modes were changed to AVs, (3) a simulation of the travelers, when P&R facilities were included in their activity chain plans, and (4) a simulation of their daily activity plans, when both P&R and AVs were included in their activity chain plans. The result showed that using the P&R system increased overall travel time, compared with using a private car. The results also demonstrated that using AVs as a replacement for conventional cars reduced travel time. In conclusion, the impact of P&R and AVs on the travel behavior of certain travelers was evaluated in this paper.

Rizopoulos D and Esztergár-Kiss D (2020), "A Method for the Optimization of Daily Activity Chains Including Electric Vehicles", Energies. Vol. 13(4)
Abstract: The focus of this article is to introduce a method for the optimization of daily activity chains of travelers who use Electric Vehicles (EVs) in an urban environment. An approach has been developed based on activity-based modeling and the Genetic Algorithm (GA) framework to calculate a suitable schedule of activities, taking into account the locations of activities, modes of transport, and the time of attendance to each activity. The priorities of the travelers concerning the spatial and temporal flexibility were considered, as well as the constraints that are related to the limited range of the EVs, the availability of Charging Stations (CS), and the elevation of the road network. In order to model real travel behavior, two charging scenarios were realized. In the first case, the traveler stays in the EV at the CS, and in the second case, the traveler leaves the EV to charge at the CS while conducting another activity at a nearby location. Through a series of tests on synthetic activity chain data, we proved the suitability of the method elaborated for addressing the needs of travelers and being utilized as an optimization method for a modern Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).

Abstract: The paper proposes an eco-cruise control strategy for urban public transport buses. The aim of the velocity control is ensuring timetable adherence, while considering upstream queue lengths at traffic lights in a probabilistic way. The contribution of the paper is twofold. First, the shockwave profile model (SPM) is extended to capture the stochastic nature of traffic queue lengths. The model is adequate to describe frequent traffic state interruptions at signalized intersections. Based on the distribution function of stochastic traffic volume demand, the randomness in queue length, wave fronts, and vehicle numbers are derived. Then, an outlook is provided on its applicability as a full-scale urban traffic network model. Second, a shrinking horizon model predictive controller (MPC) is proposed for ensuring timetable reliability. The intention is to calculate optimal velocity commands based on the current position and desired arrival time of the bus while considering upcoming delays due to red signals and eventual queues. The above proposed stochastic traffic model is incorporated in a rolling horizon optimization via chance-constraining. In the optimization, probabilistic guarantees are formulated to minimize delay due to standstill in queues at signalized intersections. Optimization results are analyzed from two particular aspects, (i) feasibility and (ii) closed-loop performance point of views. The novel stochastic profile model is tested in a high fidelity traffic simulator context. Comparative simulation results show the viability and importance of stochastic bounds in urban trajectory design. The proposed algorithm yields smoother bus trajectories at an urban corridor, suggesting energy savings compared to benchmark control strategies.

Zefreh MM, Esztergar-Kiss D and Torok A (2020), "Implications of different road pricing schemes in urban areas: a case study for Budapest", Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Transport. Vol. 0(0), pp. 1-12.
Abstract: Road pricing is an efficient instrument to regulate use of roads. In Budapest, Hungary, only cordon pricing has been investigated in detail. This paper reports on a study of the implications of applying different road pricing schemes in the city using a macroscopic traffic model. Firstly, the functional relationship between pricing schemes and road transport demand was investigated. Secondly, the implications of applying road pricing schemes on travel demand, travel time, delay time, average speed and carbon dioxide emissions of road users inside and outside of the pricing area, as well as revenues generated by applying the schemes, were studied. The results revealed that a time-based system showed the best performance inside the pricing area. However, it generated heavy congestion on non-priced roads bordering the pricing area, which would increase travel times, delay times and carbon dioxide emissions and would decrease average travel speeds on the entire network. The cordon-based system was the least effective pricing system for most of the studied parameters, while the distance-based system showed good performance both inside and outside the pricing area. Regarding the revenues generated, variable-toll systems (time-based and distance-based systems) showed the potential to generate higher revenues than the fixed-toll system (cordon-based system).

Esztergár-Kiss D and Kerényi T (2019), "Creation of mobility packages based on the MaaS concept", Travel Behaviour and Society.
Abstract: Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is a solution that combines a number of services and provides a platform, where multimodal journey planning, booking, payment and ticketing are integrated. Current MaaS solutions provide pay-as-you-go options or predefined mobility packages, however research and development in this field are still far from a mature concept. This paper deals with the creation of mobility packages for users, taking into account several city specific parameters (e.g. demography, cost of living, modal split, weather conditions, environmental friendliness). A method has been elaborated, which assigns package levels to cities involving different transportation modes, such as public transport, bike-sharing, car-sharing and taxi. During the analysis 15 cities in Europe have been considered and based on their specific parameters the most suitable mobility packages were created for them.

Abstract: Traffic control of urban areas is a current research topic. Different pricing regimes such as cordon pricing, time-based average cost zone pricing, distance-based average cost zone pricing or marginal cost zone pricing have been investigated so far. The economical best solution, however, cannot be used due to the lack of information. In the study, the future of road pricing together with traffic control is analysed with the assumption of widespread information and communications technology (ICT) usage, i.e. access to real-time information. The study proposes a utility-based dynamic road pricing for optimal traffic flow management. The research largely focused on the model and regulator definition [fixed, dynamic, and non-linear model predictive control (MPC)]. The theoretical research was conducted on a real-world traffic test network by applying different control methods and taking into account the time-delay effect of traffic forecasting. The simulation results show that time delay in response to vehicle concentration can result in significant oscillation on the concurrent routes in case of fixed and dynamic control, but can be compensated by non-linear MPC. As a major result, it is shown that with the market penetration of ICT, a new era of road tolling regimes could be introduced.

Varga B, Tettamanti T and Kulcsár B (2019), "Energy-aware predictive control for electrified bus networks", Applied Energy. Vol. 252, pp. 113477.
Abstract: For an urban bus network to operate efficiently, conflicting objectives have to be considered: providing sufficient service quality while keeping energy consumption low. The paper focuses on energy efficient operation of bus lines, where bus stops are densely placed, and buses operate frequently with possibility of bunching. The proposed decentralized, bus fleet control solution aims to combine four conflicting goals incorporated into a multi-objective, nonlinear cost function. The multi-objective optimization is solved under a receding horizon model predictive framework. The four conflicting objectives are as follows. One is ensuring periodicity of headways by watching leading and following vehicles i.e. eliminating bus bunching. Equal headways are only a necessary condition for keeping a static, predefined, periodic timetable. The second objective is timetable tracking. A conflicting objective to the former is minimizing passenger waiting time. When more than the expected passengers are waiting for the bus it is desirable to haste the vehicle in order to prevent bunching. The final objective is energy efficiency. To this end, an energy consumption model is formulated considering battery electric vehicles with recuperation during braking. Different weighting strategies are compared and evaluated through realistic scenarios, realized in a validated microscopic traffic simulation environment. Simulation results suggest 3–8% network level energy saving compared to bus holding control while maintaining punctuality and periodicity of buses.
